My Interview with Family Law Attorney Tania K. Harvey

attorney divorce Jan 29, 2021

Ladies, I know that the early stages of the divorce process can be overwhelming, confusing, and heartbreaking.  I recently had a candid conversation with Tania K. Harvey, family law attorney and owner of The Law Office of Tania K. Harvey, P.C., to learn more about how women can effectively navigate the early stages of the divorce process … and more.

1. Tania, I work primarily with professional women who I think of as superwomen!  They’re balancing heavy demands at work and at home.  What is the first thing you would say to a woman in a highly demanding job who just realized she is also going to be faced with divorce?

BREATHE.  Then get a plan in place by speaking with a knowledgeable attorney in the field. You want someone that is going to walk you through the process and explain it to you, so you can set expectations for yourself when it comes to your job, your family, and most of all, making sure you take care of you.

2. What is the best way for women to learn more about their legal options when it comes to divorce?

Talk to a professional. It is so easy to talk to your friends who have gone through it, and they will tell you to do XYZ, or to hire this person because "they got everything and the kids!" But every case is SO fact specific, and court room specific, that just because your friend did _____, doesn't mean it will work for you.

3. How do you help your clients manage the "business of divorce” such as paperwork, forms, agreements and beyond?

It can be a very overwhelming process, and you need to be able to work collaboratively with your attorney. I make sure myself and my team (paralegals and law clerks) are available to answer questions and continue to follow up so we have timely compliance with deadlines imposed by our office and by the courts, if applicable.  It is important that you have a good relationship with me, and that we can trust each other, so we can complete the tasks at hand.   If you’re working with a divorce coach, I will also form a relationship so that we’re all working collaboratively as trusted professionals on your behalf.

4. Many professional moms find divorce especially taxing on their children, what advice do you have to make sure things are running smoothly at home?

It is important to know that this is new to you, but also new to your children.  You cannot handle it alone, and they should not either. I always encourage my clients to get their children connected to a therapist so they have an independent person to talk to, or even the school guidance counselor/social worker. They need help too!

5. What is one thing you would like to tell professional women to do to make the divorce process easier on themselves?

I know as a divorce coach, Andrea, you suggest that women going through divorce find their support team.  The divorce process altogether will take time, so it is important to surround yourself with a supportive group of professionals to help you get through it every step of the way.  I wish more of my clients hired coaches like you!

6. Finally, Tania, I’m in the business of helping women find a happily BETTER after their divorce story, what does HAPPILY BETTER AFTER mean to you?

My goal with my clients is to always empower them to know their worth, and not be discouraged by their circumstances. I also want to engage in the process with dignity and respect with all involved. I want them to walk away from the divorce process with their head held high, knowing that they will have a happily better after too, and it is possible.
